This is entirely based on your personal comprehension style (yes, this varies from person to person). Some people learn aurally (through listening) and others visually (and others kinetically, but that doesn't really apply here). For myself, I need to read visually and I would find listening to be distracting; you may be entirely the opposite.
You may be surprised to learn that your ability to read aloud also effects your ability to read to yourself, so if you struggle with comprehension when you're reading silently, practicing reading to others can be a great way to go.
It's incredibly important to learn which practice works best for you particularly when you're studying material that you have to retain and understanding how you think for the long haul.

What gives you the best reading comprehension, reading the book, listening to the book, or doing both at the same time?
I am looking at reading some rather large public domain texts and want to really remember it.
Am i best just reading the book? Listening to the book? or reading the book while also listening to the book?

I would think that listening and reading will be distracting if done together. Why not try listening to a portion first. If you can't remember, then you can go back to reading. If you find yourself remembering, then keep on listening. I use to listen to cassette books. I can still remember some of them better than some of the books that I have read. I had not realized that until you asked.
