Hey psycgirl!
I work in a busy office and have a really strong case of ADHD. To help keep my attention on my work, I went and bought a bunch of ambient sound cd's.
It sounds cheesy, but ocean waves, jungle sounds, crickets, waterfalls and streams (although these sometimes make me have to go to the mens lav) really drown out the distracting sounds and sort of center me, not to mention actually relaxes me at the same time.
In fact, some of my office mates here told me to take out the ear buds and play it for everyone - they're into it too.
Give it a shot, they sell the cd's at Bed Bath and Beyond and then just download them to your iPod (or whatever!). They're cheap and really help!
Best wishes!

What do you do to block out noise from outside when you are inside studying, reading or concentrating?
Earplugs don't seem to be enough, any other suggestions?

Listen to music, I prefer without lyrics so I can read and write better because I dont get distracted by the words in the music. Remeber to use good earphones or preferably headphones. If that doesnt work for you use earplugs and if all else fails or that is uncomfortable go to your public or school/college library. Take a drink and a snack with you, dont forget all your study items and leave your cell at home.

If the weather is warm enough, I close the windows and put on the air conditioner. What you need under these circumstances is soemthing called "white noise" which is noise that is steady and consistent and doesn't distract you from what you are doing, and can even help ou sleep. Another thing I do is turn to the "music choice" channels on my cable tv and put n some soft classical or light "new age" music. There are even tapes I have seen for sale at Hallmark stores which play nature sounds, like birds, or waterfalls. These can be very soothing and drown out the unpleasant sounds. Here is a link to a "white noise machine" which can be bought through Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KUHFGM/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=3404172317&ref=pd_sl_75ya6urn6k_b

I close the windows, turn on the fan to the low setting just to create a circulated air flow and put the air conditioner on low. Next I plug in my table top water fountain. This helps to create a "zen" like atmosphere. Soft music in the background is always calming as well.
