The central theme of this book is said to be "love". The love in this instance has more of an affect on marriage itself and what other people see it as. Unhappy marriage brought Jude and Sue together through a bond that neither one has ever felt before. Unfortunately for the both of them, they are cursed by the family and have to deal with others not accepting them for what they are.

-Social ostracism (Jude and Sue are ostracized)
-Feelings of obligation towards parents/authority figures and fear of failure (Little Father Time's murder/suicide)
-Inability to find love
