According to Mahalo, "Lionfish are members of the Scorpaenidae family characterized by their brightly colored, striped bodies and radiating, venomous spines."

They also are characterized by:

- bony ridge across the cheek and the flaps that partially cover both the eyes and nose.
-a "tentacle" above both eyes.
