Hello,
I understand how you are feeling right now. I graduated in 1991. I decided to go back to college after having 2 kids, gotten divorce and to top the cake ...laid off. I was scared and some what skeptical. The most important thing is to know exactly what you want. If you are ready ...go for it!
I found college that provides me with flexible schedule and most important I didnt have to be there 4 years to finish my BA.
I been back in school for a year and three months, I'm a Junior....one year and 2 more months and I will be only 8 credits away from my BA.
Actions make fears disappear!
If I could do it having a 12 year old, a 8 year old autistic son, work full-time and take care of the house while been a full-time student .....Honey ...YOU CAN DO IT!!! GO FOR IT!!
First, decided what career you are interested, then decided if you want to study online or on campus. Google online universities or colleges that offer the BA that you are interested in, fill out the info and they will contact you within 24 hours.
lots of love and best wishes

My suggestion is to find a community college, and enroll in a class. Some of them even have ''community classes" that are very cheap and very informal. A class like that might help you get your feet wet. It also might help if you had a partner to enroll along with you. My wife and I took a community college course on WWII history that was team taught by five WWII veterans. It was the most interesting thing I've ever heard in my life.
Most community colleges will have course listings on-line, but I prefer to swing by and pick up a print copy. They will also be glad to meet with you and answer your questions.
Some colleges actually have introductory classes for folks who are coming back to school after a long absence, which might be perfect for you. I'd start out with something like sociology or history, or maybe even writing, rather than something like math or science, but that's because those are my strengths and weaknesses. Consider that you want to do whatever you can to start out with a little success, as you may feel lost, out of place and insecure. But I think you will find that there are others out there just like you.

Should I go back to school?
I've been debating on going back to school. I graduated high school but that was 20 years ago. I would like to start on maybe an online high school (as a refresher course) then move up to college courses and in time perhaps even a degree. Any suggestions on how to find the right courses/schools?

If it's been 20 years, you HAVE to go back to school or you'll be shooting yourself in the foot. There's so much that has changed.
From how to submit a winning resume (it's not how we used to do it) to computer programs in use today. To be viable in today's economy you have to have updated skill sets and at least a BA or BS from a reputable college.
Start at your local Community College but keep in mind what you want said on your certificate for your chosen profession. The class in Resume Writing is a good class to take your first semester (although some say to take it last). I say first because it may help you decide what degree to actually get.
There are basic classes that you'll need for any degree, get those out of the way first. Your school counsellor can help you with that. A degree in small business administration is a win/win no matter what you want to do. No degree at all will interfere with your ability to be promoted to management. If you start your own business, the Business Admin classes will help you succeed even more.
I lasted a year and a half before I started to burn out and my grades showed it. Straight A's (only got C's and D's in high school) until my last 2 quarters then I started getting B's. So I walked away with an AA degree in Network Administration.
But now I'm a photographer - go figure. :) That degree in small business admin would have paid off!
Good luck!
