Negative... Mahalo is a real word and sincerely used.
Of course, there might be people out there trying to scam tourists, but that's not the Hawaiian way of doing things.
I try an use "Mahalo nui loa" more often. "nui loa" can be translated as "very much".

It makes sense though. It seems like Mahalo is thanking the contributors of the site?
I'd like to know what the insider point of view is, can you be more specific?

I have read that Mahalo is a very gracious way to say thank you for someone done by someone else. I am not sure if it's true. I had the same curiosity when I came to this site. It makes sense though. It seems like Mahalo is thanking the contributors of the site?

Well, I am saying about use of "mahalo" word. I know from wikipedia that mahalo is a well greeting word but my friend says that "mahalo" just used to the tourists in Hawaii as a greeting word but they use it inside their as a funny word not as a greeting word.
Sorry, I am not a native speaker so may my question is unclear.

Actually, according to Wikipedia it means: thanks, gratitude, admiration, praise, esteem, regards, respects. So I guess it could be a greeting, but considering "thanks" is the first word, why would you meet someone and say thanks? :)

ETA: maybe thanks for the opportunity to meet them? I wish I knew some folks from Hawaii, I'd like to get the inside scoop

"Mahalo" is NOT a greeting word. Mahalo means "thank you".
The traditional greeting is "Aloha"... which means many other things as well as "Welcome".

Maybe the Hawaiians are thanking the tourists in advance for spending huge sums of money.
