As a tutor of students of all ages, I incorporate the website studyisland.com. There are math questions by grade level and topic and when a student reaches 75% proficiency in the topic, he or she can then play games along with doing the problems. If the student gets a problem correct, he or she can take one turn at a particular game. There are all kinds of games to choose from. It's one way to make learning math fun for the kids. I don't work with teaching reading, but I would suggest having young kids read on topics that interest them. There is nothing worse than requiring students to read something boring that wont hold their interest, especially during the younger elementary years when kids are learning the basics of reading and comprehension.

If you were an elementary school teacher, how would you inspire kids to learn reading and math skills?
Good reading and writing skills, and math, are the building blocks to many other skills ! Yet sometimes this skill is not focused on in schools and young kids pay more attention to "fun stuff" like sports, music, art or science. What do you think?
