Applying the principles I use with my own children:
Teach them how to think critically. Do not accept an answer purely because it comes from authority.
Teach them to question what they are told. If something doesn't seem right, they should question it.
Teach them to want an explanation. Anyone can learn facts off rote, but to actually understand something is a much better way to learn.
Teach them inquisitiveness. Make learning something that is enjoyable, that they want to do more of and to never be satisfied that they know enough.
Teach them reason. Learning how to work something out yourself is a much better option than waiting for the answer.
Teach them respect is earned, not automatic.
Teach them to be competitive. People and countries become great by wanting to be better than others. It is the driving force of innovation and achievement. With this, teach them that everyone has the right to compete.
Teach them to be open minded. This does not mean accepting anything as possible, but to be open to apply critical thinking to any idea they are presented with and know which to accept and which to reject.
Teach them to stand up for their beliefs and to fight strongly for them.
Teach them to accept when they are wrong and to accept it with humility.
Teach them to be passionate about things that interest them.
Teach them to enjoy being individual.

Teach them HOW to think. The list above is good but I see it as more of what to think about. They need critical thinking to understand what they are thinking about - otherwise the tendency is to rote learning and application of what memorized - not necessarily feel or understand.
That's it: Critical Thinking.
Everything else is secondary.

Try to be always prepared. If your assignment is due Tuesday, have it ready no later than Sunday. This is important because you never know what can happen and when it can happen. If you get sick Monday, you do not have anything to worry about, because your work is finish. I'll tell them:" This is also they way things should be when you have a job."
This is important to me because, many times bad things have happened to me at the very last minute. Thanks God, I was prepared ahead of time and knew how to deal with the situations.

"This above all, to thy own self be true."
-Shakespeare "Hamlet"
Students now a days always tend to go with the trend and do things that they personally would never do, just because everyone else is doing it. People may say that this has been going on forever "Monkey see Monkey do". Today though it has come to a new low, think of all the 10-14 year olds you hear about sending naked pictures through their phones. How many 15 and 16 year olds get pregnant now.
I know more teens in the 15-17 areas that can say they have done cocaine then I do adults!
So I would say that would be the one thing I would teach them. Be who you are, not what everyone thinks you are. Once you leave School not one person is going to care who you "were". They are going to care who you ARE and its not going to be pretty site if you are 21, living at home with mom & dad, broke and having to do things you never imagined because you cant get a job due to drug testing, just to get that $50 to get you high for the day.

I would not be allowed to be a teacher because I would teach the basics and go from there. But this is what I call the basic's.
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
5. Honour thy father and thy mother.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10. Thou shalt not covet.
This copy Found in Exodus 20:1-17 in the Bible

A love for learning.
No matter what subject one teaches, if students can be engaged in the content to the point where they truly enjoy learning about it, then teaching has been a success.
This is exceptionally difficult. However, I think it's the most important thing that a teacher can do.

Besides teaching the next generation how to think for themselves and not be a mindless lemming and follow the pack, I would teach them more about financial matters for when they enter college and the work force.
Now all high schools teach the basics of check writing, credit cards, credit scoring, bank accounts, job preparation and so on, so many students are unprepared for when they go to college and end up digging themselves into a hole that takes them 5 or 10 years, or longer to get themselves out of.

I would teach them not to be prejudice or racist to any other students. That is because it is a big deal for teenage kids. They think they can just joke around about stereotypes and stuff and it should not be allowed.
Basic business skills. Throughout life regardless of higher education everyone will have to deal in a some form of monetary transaction. Providing this type of education at a younger age and making a standardized part of the youths curriculum is paramount.
Just think about the last time you wished you know more about investing or banking transactions. Then think about the last time you were happy you took that trig class in high school.
High school should be a place where everyone learns something they feel good about and find useful in their own lives. This way they will be more encouraged about academic education in general, and less resentful of it.
Business education is my personal preference having obtained a higher education degree.

Knowing how to say "I don't know" and how to look for answers. I think that true learning starts when you know that you don't know something and seek the answer for that question. It is a continual process. Too many times people just stop.

I will teach them how to behave well in the society, because today I see corruption everywhere, because of money we must teach them the value of education if not they will get wild.
I will teach my students that how to learn.
I think the most important thing I would teach my students would be how to logically connect each lesson with a simple & understandable "real life" situation (whatever the subject may be), depending on the level of maturity the child's mind.
I found the best solution for my 12 year old daughter was with "hands-on-experience." Implementing hands-on solutions in your teaching will really help them once they are out in society alone.
Also, I found that many public schools do not offer enough LATIN classes. Since I've traveled to Europe I found that if I had the option to take Latin in High School then I would probably be one-stelp ahead and actually learn more languages. Many words in various languages are based on based on Old Latin.
I remember only being offered Spanish, German, and French.
