I want to learn (to speak) Japanese. I know Rosetta Stone works. I cannot justify the cost to myself... Any other suggestions?

Many Universities set up a tutoring service for both students and non-students....for students it's free, but for non-students there is usually a cost that the tutor will adjust according to their services.
It's actually easier to learn with a tutor (from personal experience)...often the Rosetta Stone will teach you the minimal communication skills, not slang, not contemporary culture. It's important to learn these things. Slang is actually more pertinent than correct grammar in today's world, especially in travel.

Our county library offers nine foreign languages including Japanese and Chinese. It is free and awesome. My daughter and I are learning German via this service.
