Do you mean "psychology"? There are MANY flavors of psychology, but there are the main ones in a nutshell:
Psychoanalytic: Freud's thoughts that we create conscious and unconscious defense mechanisms in response to interruptions in psychological developmental stages. (Major branches: Object Relations, Self Psychology)
Cognitive-Behavioral: Beliefs and automatic thoughts shape emotions and actions. Change the beliefs/thoughts, change the emotions/actions.
Humanistic/Existential-Gestalt: Accept responsibility for life because we create of own meaning. Focus on self-actualization, self-acceptance and gaining greater self-awareness.
Narrative: The person isn't the problem. The problem is the problem. We create the story of our lives and we can re-author the story of we so choose. The stories that we engage in give meaning to our experiences. (Note: This is one of the Postmodern theories).
Family systems theories:
Extended Family Systems: Families transmit psychological characteristics over several generations. Two basic ways of being - differentiated and enmeshed. Focuses on becoming differentiated.
Structural: Inappropriate family structure creates problems and therapist works towards the appropriate family structure in which the rules and boundaries between subsystems are functionally appropriate.
Strategic: Symptoms are attempts to gain control or power in relationships. Relationships are power struggles. The system is problematic and must be fixed by improving communication and avoiding triangulation.
