I had some of the bitter clear polish painted in my nails when I was 10. It tasted bitter awful and with a hot pepper afterbite. It worked, in a way.
I also convinced myself that even a little nail biting once in a while looked stupid.
For both boys and girls, tell them that it also it wears down your teeth, especially the front ones.
It introduces bacteria, germs, and viruses into your body, from anything you touch with your hands and put directly into your mouth.
So, by the time I was about 12, I painted my nails proudly with clear polish. It made them stronger and prettier. I'm now 57, and definitely quit biting nails at age 10, still paint them pretty colors. It's fun!
Today, they are cranberry colored L'Oreal polish with clear topcoat.

In the class room, well you could reward them at the end of the week (Candy or something) for everyone who didnt bite their nails.
Really you cant control what other people do, espically children.

(1) Putting nasty tasting or spicy hot products on the fingernails. I guess you could even use jalapeno juice for a homemade remedy - it could be sadistic ! or garlic. But there are commercial items, as mentioned before.
(2) Putting something over the fingernails so they aren't readily accessible, such as bandages or gloves, something that makes them aware of the subconscious tendencies towards fingernail biting. I think that having a banaid with cartoon characters on it would help with the children. Or you could paint with them cartoon figures on gloves.
(3) You could cut the fingernails often so that there is nothing much to chew on.
You could also suggest to them other things that they can think or do, so that they can be a part of the process of retraining whatever it is within them towards a more neutral or productive behaviour.
Patience is needed to to this. It is like any other bad habit, it may take weeks or months.

There is a AntiNail biting finger nail (clear) polish, it has some hot spice in it so when you bite you get a little reminder not to do that. In the class room, well you could reward them at the end of the week (Candy or something) for everyone who didnt bite their nails.

I wonder if it would be possible to develop a version of this method as a play to be attractive to children: http://www.dragosroua.com/how-to-create-a-habit-in-15-days/

There are three different basic ways: (1) Putting nasty tasting or spicy hot products on the fingernails. I guess you could even use jalapeno juice for a homemade remedy - it could be sadistic ! or garlic. But there are commercial items, as mentioned before.
