I started with "the portable Nietzsche", a collection of a few of his books in their entirety, as well as excerpts from several of his books. They span his career and you get a good sense of how his philosophy developed. It's also a good translation.

But here's a better way to introduce yourself not just to Nietzsche but to any new philosophy, find the "introducing ..." or "... for beginners" series on the topic. These are short, illustrated books, about 100 pages or so, which you can read in 2 hours. Most are pretty good, and if you find that it's not for you, you haven't invested too much time.

Asker's Rating:
• There were a lot of great answers to this question but I find this one the most helpful. I think I will start with "The Portable Nietzsche" since it does span his career and I can sample many of his books.

Thanks for the answer!

Maybe the best place to start would be to read a book *about* Friedrich Nietzsche.

Here is a good collection suggestion by the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

In the meantime you can watch this great BBC Documentary on Nietzsche

Beyond Good And Evil is probably the best one of Nietzsche's to start with.

Thus Spake Zarathustra has influenced the whole existentialist movement (plus a few fascists). It is easy to read, more poetic in style than real philosophy

Walter Kaufmann's anthologies of Nietzsche are the best by far, go for his versions. . .

"Morality as Anti-nature" is an interesting essay of his I read in class. Basically he wrote why he view religion and morality with skepticism and why he thinks it's a total waste of time. He argued that the religion and morality interferes with human evolution of the mind. He states that morality and religion gives false sense of security.
