The correlation coefficient represents the extent to which two random variables are related. A coefficient of 1 means that there is a perfect linear relationship between the two variables; a change in one variable results in a specific change in the other. A coefficient of 0 indicates that the two variables are completely unrelated, and a change in one has no particular effect on the value of the other.
