Am I too strict if I throw away fashion magazines when my students are reading them while I'm teaching, after getting the mothers' approval

I have a couple of girls in my Math Class that will bring their Latina, Glamour and various other fashion magazines to my class and read them while I am teaching. I have spoken to their mothers about this and all of them say "throw them away" sometimes I'll shred them in front of the class. How would you handle the situation

By all means continue taking these magazines away and toss them every time. Give them one and only one warning in the begining of the school year 1st offense take magazine(s) away and call parent and ask how they feel about this and ensuing consequences.

2nd offense magazine gets put in the file 13
3rd offense I gather the magazines and take them home and burn them.

If they agree, stick with the consequences rigidly.

I had one mother fed up with her daughter doing this so she gathered all her daughters' magazines and brought them into a pts meeting and tore up every last page and told her "I expect You to go school and learn, not to sit around and waste time by reading this trash, and your Latina and Glamour magazines have been canceled." " I better not see another one in your room"

School is for Education not fashion and beauty. I know one teacher who took the magazines home and let her young daughter cut the magazines up and she then hung the "artwork" up in her class for the semester as a reminder

I don't see it as "strict". I see the girls being disrespectful and... there are consequences. They know what the consequences are, so they get to choose how they behave.

I would also take an inward look to see if there were anything I could do different to move them away from reading magazines in class. Am I not challenging them enough? Are they not engaged? If so, how could I challenge them or engage them better?

You are not over reacting at all. I see this as a parenting issue. If the mothers say it is ok to throw them away, then the mothers should be doing what they can to curb the problem. It is not your job as a teacher to teach respect to the students, it is the parents job.

Unfortunately, when parents fail, it is up to responsible adults to take action. You are being strict in demanding their respect, but you are not being unreasonable. Keep doing what you are doing, throw those magazines away, and Thank God patient people like you are willing to teach today's youth. I couldn't do it.
