Retail theft has been up 5.9% since the current recession began. Any thoughts?

Well they would wouldn't they.

Seriously, a lot of "studies" conducted or paid for by companies are a joke, whatever they're about.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was more crime though. No-one expected anything else in a recession.

The link between recession and patterns of crime is interesting. If it wasn't I wouldn't have looked at your question. :)

It's just that particular study that I'd take with a pinch of salt.

It'll be interesting if when the recovery gets going, companies selling security stuff start publishing studies saying: "Shoplifting down!" If they did, I don't think CNN would cover that story anyway. :)
