How can I securely distribute a video over the 'net?

I'd like to sell a video over the 'net, but don't have much resources to pay for the bandwidth. I'm thinking of using a peer-to-peer distribution.

Any ideas how I can sell a video and then distribute it cost effectively?

Try Drop.io's Pay Wall

http://drop.io/paywalldemo

Paywall makes online transactions simple, easy and private.

Place content in your Drop.io drop and enable Paywall to charge users for access to your drop. Access can be either per use or subscription based.

All Paywall transactions are processed by Amazon so your users can use their existing Amazon accounts to pay for access to your drop's content.

Paywall has many advantages over other third party retail systems:

• unique storefronts for single or multiple digital assets
• access to Amazon's near ubiquitous accounts
• low commission structure
• trusted Amazon payment processing
• access to Drop.io sharing services to broadcast your content's availability

Paywall has numerous benefits to independent content developers who are looking for a lightweight transaction system to sell their offerings. Below please find three use cases to demonstrate how individuals and groups can use Paywall.

Consider the Vuse network.

http://www.vuze.com/Publish.html

It does all of what you have mentioned.

Monetize Your Content the Way You Want
-Ad supported
-Electronic Sell Through at the price you choose
-Or, you can offer it to viewers for free with no ads

Maintain Control & Flexibility
-Replicate your current monetization strategy
-Use Vuze to test new business models
-Content expiry gives you total control of content availability windows

And it is based on a P2P network.

Hope this helps

You mention selling it...

This means that you'll have a limited audience (in relation to sales).

So, if properly encoded and compressed, the cost of bandwidth and distributing your videos will relate directly to your profit.

I'd use Flash and store the videos on your own website. I'd lock them down in a members area. Think private, secure, youtube. This isn't as complicated as it sounds and could be as easy as uploading whatever format your video camera spits out into the administration area of your website.

Technically everything from encoding (ffmpeg) to the web based members area (custom based on your needs) is pretty easy to setup. You could get a freelancer to complete the project for about $100 - $250 including the fronted website U.I, encoding, etc.

This would give you a significant amount of control / flexibility and would be the most secure. You would have full control over your content, pricing structure, etc and the only fees you would pay could be carefully calculated and infinitely expandable.
