How can I download a credit-card-only account into Quicken 2008 for Windows via Direct Connect?
Quicken now gives me error code OL-226-A when I attempt to download my credit card transactions directly into Quicken, as opposed to the indirect method of going to the Bank of America web site, choosing the statement I think I need, then choosing the file format, saving that to my desktop, before finally importing into Quicken.
I got off the phone with their support team but I think I'm being given the shaft because they say, "You cannot download transactions directly from within Quicken with a credit-card-only account. You must have a checking account with us in order for your credit cards to download directly into Quicken." Additionally, I have been downloading my credit-card-only account information directly into Quicken for several years now. Only recently has Quicken been giving me error messages.
I researched this online and found that it appears Bank of America might be sending null values in its direct download file and for some reason Quicken doesn't know how to interpret those null values, but I'm not sure how I feel about that answer, since I've been direct downloading my credit-card-only statements into quicken for years now.

First of all, know that you are _not_ alone. (I assume you did this google search already? http://www.google.com/search?q=OL-226-A+bank+of+america)
Quicken/Intuit's response to an OL-266 is as mind numbingly frustrating as you've already experienced...
https://quicken.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/quicken.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=6866 (my search for Win 2008)
https://quicken.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/quicken.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2601 (very similar link mentioned in the sites below.)
These end in the dreaded "...the best course of action is to work with your financial institution to resolve this error."
Which by law, I think, should have included "and your financial institution will blame it on Quicken."
The "Null" explanation, unfortunately, is a lot of geek speak. Some databases can't handle Null, they need to see "" or "0". Null is the equivalent of nothing, while "" and "0" are actually "something".
BUT, it's likely the truth.... So, here's an answer that may help...
-------------
Save the downloaded transactions to a file (stmt.qfx).
Edit the file and look for tag(s) where is empty.
Enter a dummy name after if necessary.
Import the edited .qfx file.

Likely, you have 1, just 1 entry that's bad. Find it. Put a fake name in (you might have to do this each time until that entry is out of the date range/loop), and you _should_ hopefully be okay.
But, wait, other links point out other data errors...

Notes a comma in the wrong spot. (Scroll down to #11)
--------
Now, what do you need to look for? Well, ironically, the Quicken helpfile link _has_ the answer. While confusing, the method is to show you what tag has the offending issue.
If you can find that line, that is the one to fix. You might want to post it here, along with a "good" example line, and people might be able to figure it out.
