What article(s) best describe the strategy and results Radiohead achieved launching their album online, without a specific price?

Hi there,

I´m looking for articles that describe very well how the strategy to NOT charge a specific price for the album donwload, instead, they let the customers chose how much were they willing to pay (or get it for free).

- How many fans payed for the album (and wich percentage)?
- How the album financial results compared with other Radiohead albuns?
- Does it give a clue if it´s a good strategy to repeat this strategy on different information products?

Thanks a lot,

Miguel

- How many fans payed for the album (and wich percentage)?

2 out of 5 downloaders pay for In Rainbows by Raiohead.

38% paid while 62% did not.

- How the album financial results compared with other Radiohead albuns?

Almost 2 million copies of In Rainbows have sold. At at average of $6 per copy, that equals about 12 million dollars.

That is a far cry from other Radiohead releases.

However, it is inadequate to calculate the financial gains of any album when only considering album sales.

- Does it give a clue if it´s a good strategy to repeat this strategy on different information products?

Yes, it does give the record industry a "clue" as to an alternative strategy to make money from music.

It has been said that there are 5 different options for the future success of the music industry. Pay-what-you-want is one of them. Other options include:

Pay By Popularity

Subscription

Music Tax
