NCDC has lots of climate data, both global and historical. Much of it is free (with certain licensing restrictions), some of it costs money.

I'm guessing the Surface Data: Daily or Surface Data: Monthly sections will be most useful to you. The amount of data that's available, and how far back it goes, depends a lot on the country, but some of it goes back as far as 1800.

NOAA's website - I work at a weather derivatives firm, so I work with this data on a day-to-day basis. It's definitely a valuable and credible source!

What you'll want is to use the GSOD (Global Summary of the Day) data provided by the NOAA. It includes rainfall/temperature/wind/snow depth for tens of thousands of locations worldwide. You can find it below: http://cdo.ncdc.noaa.gov/CDO/wmores40.jsp?page=http://www7.ncdc.noaa.gov/CDO/cdoselect.cmd?datasetabbv=GSOD%26countryabbv=%26georegionabbv=
