Can I park in a handicap parking spot?

Because of an accident I am unable to walk without using crutches.  Can I legally park in handicap parking spots in California before the DMV issues me a handicap parking sticker?  Will the handicap parking sticker be retroactive to the time of my accident?

It's probably better to wait until your permit is issued. Penalties for parking in a handicapped spot without a placard are pretty steep.

My sister is in a wheelchair and when she visited for Christmas our parents forgot to send her handicapped parking placard with her. This meant that, everywhere we went we had to park way out in whatever parking spot was available (Christmas rush and all that), unload her wheelchair and push her through tons of disgusting snow. It sucked, but without the handicapped permit we didn't dare park in a handicapped spot!

I would explain and talk yourself out of a ticket because of your situation, and simply say its "applied for ". But technically, how often do you really see an officer patrolling the handicapp spaces, If you are in for a few minutes doubtful it would cause trouble. Also, pay attention to if the space is painted and labeled correctly. If the sign is there and the pavement is not painted, technically it is not really a valid space. That also goes for street ways, if the curb is not painted yellow or blue, and you get a ticket you can fight, because it was not valid. Read the Rule books (state) (this is IL anyway).. its all in there...
