While the show pushes his observational powers to rather hard-to-believe extremes, it is refreshing to see a show where being intelligent and observant is celebrated.

Jane's character has just enough flaws to make him a bit more believable. He is not especially brave, nor especially strong, nor is he everybody's favorite guy. However, he does manage to get along well enough to do his job, get his own way much of the time, and solve cases much faster than the other detective characters in the show.
