Best EVER is really tough, but I'm going with "Twin Peaks." Very weird, very funny, always compelling and enough crazy mind-bending twists and turns to befuddle JJ Abrams.

The key to good drama, or good story telling for that matter, is caring for the characters. LOST achieves this in many ways, most notably through the use of flashbacks. The flashback mechanism dramatically changes later in the series, but ultimately to the same effect.
Another great thing that LOST does is being hyper-serialized. Meaning, more so than any other show, each and every episode ends mid-scene. The next weeks episode therefore picks up the second the last one left off. If you were to cut the entirety of the show back to back it would play as one long story.

Six Feet Under
This one is my favorite since it covers the many aspects and uncharted areas surrounding death. This is something that our society needs to talk about more often, and not just at funerals.

For my money, LOST is not only the greatest drama ever put on TV, but the best TV show ever made. The key to good drama, or good story telling for that matter, is caring for the characters. LOST achieves this in many ways, most notably through the use of flashbacks. The flashback mechanism dramatically changes later in the series, but ultimately to the same effect.

Excellent explanation of why you love Lost.
I'm not sure I'd choose it for best ever series, but super answer.
Btw the clip is highly spoilery for seasons 1-3 for anyone that hadn't seen them! It's hard to choose great clips without any spoilers at all, but if anyone missed it and is turned on to it by your answer a total recap of the seasons is going to spoil a lot of their fun.

Battlestar Galactica, just because it was science fiction doesn't mean it wasn't dramatic. I feel this great rush of nostalgia for the show just from watching the Season 1 trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvYVR6XXsHA

Are you limiting answers geographically? The best in the world is Densha Otoko. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4608744849209700123&ei=Q_gNSuXLFo7WrgKB94zyDg&q=densha+otoko&hl=en

I didn't limit it geographically, so I suppose it's fair game.
But I did ask for an explanation of why you think the one picked is so great. And given that most of us haven't heard of it, and won't even be able to follow the clip, we need even more of an explanation that if it was an English language show.

HBO has been the best producer of top notch dramas like: Six Feet Under
This one is my favorite since it covers the many aspects and uncharted areas surrounding death. This is something that our society needs to talk about more often, and not just at funerals.

Season 1 was Lynchian in a very good way (cf Mulholland Drive or Blue Velvet). Season 2 was Lynchian in a very, very BAD way (cf Eraserhead or--shudder--Dune).
This was the only TV show that ever elicited a bit of TV tourism out of my wife and me. We were in Seattle anyway, so took the bus out to Snoqualmie Falls. Quite lovely.
Thanks for a great answer.
