What types of dogs can be litterbox trained?
I live in the city and I am ready to add a dog to my family. However, I do not have a yard and desire a dog that can be litterbox trained. I have a sufficient amount of time to devout to training, exercising, and grooming, but I would like a friendlier trainable breed. Thank you for your suggestions!

Well, to answer your question any dog breed can be trained to do just about anything, including to use a litter box, however I wouldn't recommend litter box training for a dog. Cats use litter boxes more naturally than dogs and it will most likely be much more difficult to litter train a puppy. The best plan for having a dog or puppy in a small apartment, if you can't take them outdoors to do their business, is to use pee pads instead. I personally have never used them since I live in the country, but I have family members who have used them for their Maltese in a condo and have been very happy with them. You just train your puppy the same as if you were paper training them, but use the absorbent pee pads. This way you can use them anywhere. I would reccomend that you put them in one consistant spot in your apartment though, so as not to confuse the new puppy.
I know someone recommended a Beagle for you and as a dog breeder and rescuer of many years my experience is that Beagles don't do well in apartments. Your neighbors probably wouldn't be thrilled with the dog baying (the beagle bark) all night! Breeds that are highly recommended for apartments are Maltese, Pugs, Yorkies, Corgis, West Highland White Terriers, Italian Greyhounds, and Bichon Frises (although this breed is known to be hyper). If you want a larger dog that is still low energy and good for a small home I would recommend a Basset Hound.

Um, I'm not really sure... But IMO, beagle is the best family dog around - very friendly, particularly to kids, and very smart!
It would be easiest with a small dog, but you would also have to make sure they learn not to eat the litter.
Or use a pee pad with a grate on top like the one below.
If you really want to get creative, you can make your own litter box, buy putting the pad on a box with litter below it.

According to turbyfill.com, small dogs can be trained to use the litter box and are also said to benefit from using them. They apparently come in handy when traveling!
