I think a day in the park is a good way to celebrate for both of you. Let the dog run free for a while, or ride in the car with the windows open (they get a whole different kind of ride by smelling the air).
You could try doing something your dog likes to do (a nap, playing with a favourite toy, spend some time on the floor).
I don't know what the expert dog breeders will tell you about "getting down to his/her level" but, hey! it is his/her birthday and you want to celebrate it. That is what I call a friend.

Now, you need to find a big open grassy area. Drive away from the city if necessary. Take a Frisbee, of course.
Now you can stand in one spot and throw the Frisbee. Hopefully, your dog will bring it back to you instead of just standing out there teasing you. (I hate it when they do that.)
When you are finished playing, take your dog to dinner. Buy your dog a big fillet mignon. It will like that. Be sure to tell your dog that you love her.
When you get home, fill up the tub, put in some bubble bath and give your dog a bath. You can get in, too.

What is the best way to celebrate a dog's birthday?
Today is my dog's eighth birthday. How should we celebrate? What would a dog enjoy that doesn't require me to do much work? Humorous and serious answers welcomed.

yes. agreed. and I think your answer is the right one. Because, I mean, why spend all that money on the dog, when something pretty much free is available, and who knows, the dog might like it more!!!
Tip me myself and i for this comment

For my dog's birthday I have often gotten her birthday dog cookie from a dog boutique. They don't cost much but have what i'm assuming to be dog friendly "icing" and decorations. I put on a birthday hat and sing her Happy Birthday. Give her a few more prezzies (bones or toys) and that's about it!

First, rent an expensive convertible so that your dog can can hang it's head out as you drive. If your dog is a girl, (that is a girl dog) be sure to buy a red ribbon for her hair. Now, you need to find a big open grassy area. Drive away from the city if necessary. Take a Frisbee, of course.
Now you can stand in one spot and throw the Frisbee. Hopefully, your dog will bring it back to you instead of just standing out there teasing you. (I hate it when they do that.)

seriously, this guy has to be kidding. Why spend all that money on the dog, when it will like as much, or even more, the free stuff?

Oh wow. are you serious? you want to celebrate your dog's birthday?!? You do realize that she doesn't know that it's her birthday, don't you? just give her a bone or something. Don't waste all that money on the stuff that morris003 said. And btw: You can do the same thing with a convertible as you can with the windows down of a normal car. She gets to hang her head out either way.

Your pets are members of your family. Why not make their birthday special by throwing them a birthday party. Make it a family gathering or invite all the dogs in the neighborhood, to celebrate another year with your best friend. My puppy just turned 1 year old on April 6th and I can't think of a better way to thank her for her friendship.
