What is the best substrate to use for a dog's potty area?

I'd like to make an area in my back yard that our puppy can use as a toilet. I'd like to get some ideas of what substrate would be best - dirt, wood chips, straight cement, ???

Of course, it needs to handle poop and pee and be easy to clean or take care of.

Any thoughts?

Sand is usually used in pet potties because it is porous and absorbent. It can be scooped and replenished as needed. Doggie doo should not be allowed to remain in the potty. It should be scooped and bagged and disposed of in trash. .

Looking for litter box suggestions, I found these sites reviewing Second Nature from Purina as pretty positive:

http://www.epinions.com/review/Purina_Secondnature_Dog_Litter/pets-review-43DE-15A79241-3A1098B6-prod2

But I found this article from How Stuff Works:
http://animals.howstuffworks.com/pets/housebreaking2.htm
They say the advantage of the commercial products is not real, that you can achieve the same effect by putting a newspaper or paper towel with urine on it where you want the dog to go.

Oh, sorry; always answering before I think it through! Here's a kind of doggy septic tank you can set up:

which recommends Dooley Waste Terminator

This page:

discusses appropriate substrates for outdoor pens

Here's an article on dog kennel floors:

that addresses foot issues -- concrete versus gravel versus high density plastic

I'd go with sand. You could do it with dirt as well, but the sand will be easy to replace and clean.
