Actually, a healthy dog is best eating from the ground; he's less likely to get bloat from swallowing too much air with his food. Bloat causes the stomach to twist, trapping the contents, and is considered a medical emergency.

Vets sometimes recommend elevated dishes for older dogs with arthritis and joint problems, or breeds that are very tall.

@jillbeth -
You hit the nail on the head! The only time I worried about this was when I rescued a Great Dane. The very tall breeds need a little boost in their food bowls! (I would have to clear the table fast too!)

well i believe dogs have been eating like that for ever and they seem fine but you could always ask a vet.

Dogs have been naturally designed to eat while standing, their canine fangs pull meat apart best while getting leverage from their front legs.
Anything a dog does by instinct is going to have been learned over eons and hundreds of generations of doing the same thing time and time again.

Although you should consider the source, this Cracked article is relevant and humorous. :)
