I found a great nail clipper at a big box store that has an LED light on a flexible neck that is attached to the clippers. You aim the light at the toenail and it reveals the "quick," so that you are able to stay away from it and clip without hurting your pup. I've heard that the Peticure nail grinder makes it easy to trim your dogs nails without cutting the quick, but I've never used one myself. They only cost as much as a single nail trimming at the groomer's though, so it might be worth a shot.
