How do I cut my dog's nails without hurting him?

I'm trying to save money by not taking my dog to the groomer. What do I need and how do I know how low on the nail to cut?

I found a great nail clipper at a big box store that has an LED light on a flexible neck that is attached to the clippers. You aim the light at the toenail and it reveals the "quick," so that you are able to stay away from it and clip without hurting your pup.
