Sounds like an eye infection. You should really go to the vet. eye infections can be treated simply and easily with antibiotic eye drops, but if you let it go too long, you risk the infection creating tiny "holes" in the skin covering the dogs eye. This could lead to permanent problems, and even partial blindness.

To me, playing it by ear and just checking to inside eye skin color to see if that improves seems like an appropriate action. If this is the first time your dog has had this type of problem, it's still probably a good idea to check with the vet such that you can get similar guidelines for when there's valid cause for concern vs. a time to just wait it out.

The general rule for people and dogs is that any colored eye gunk or mucus may indicate infection. Clearer is better.

My dog has green gunk buildup in his eye. Does this sound serious? Gets a little better every day.
I've been cleaning it out for him. Every day I clean it less & less and it looks better and better. Had a vet appt. for him but canceled since it seems better, should I still take him?

My dog intermittently gets similar eye problems. The vet showed us how to check his eye by pulling slightly on the surrounding skin to expose the pinkish skin against the eye. Normally, this is should be a light peachy color but if there is an infection it is a darker pink color. We have been given antibiotic ointment which helped clear it up but on other occassions it has gone away naturally. Most likely an eye infection. My dachshund had the same thing. You can get some gel to put in the affected eye a few times a day and it'll go away in a week or less. Don't wait, as most infections won't clear up on their own - they can get worse. The general rule for people and dogs is that any colored eye gunk or mucus may indicate infection. Clearer is better.
