Dog has yellow discharge around eye

My dog, 14 week old Labradoodle woke up this morning and we found yellow puss/discharge around his eye.Do we need to take him to the vet or what can we do? Just wipe it out of his eye

First off, congrats! Dogs are amazing.

Unless you feel its excessive don't worry about it and just wipe it away with his ears for convenience.   A little yellow morning eye goo is very common and as I understand is tantamount to a bit of allergic reaction.

If you feel it's excessive (unsightly, constant through the day) it could be caused by infection or malformed eye lid/lash  and you should indeed go to the vet.

In the event you feel it's marginal call I would call your vet and describe it in detail as an intermediate step.

We're new to this with our first dog, and what would you consider excessive?

Pictures or references or something?

I found it helpful sometimes to remember that dogs only moved into the house in the past century and lived off human scrap for 10,000 years or something, they are incredibly robust pound fr pound.

Anything in the normal sized booger range first thing in the morning I wouldn't give it another thought.

its too bad Ceasar isn't a mahalo member. I would also check out his book "Ceasar's Way"....some ppl find its a bit autobiographical in the beginning , but being fanboy #1 i loved it. The audio version, which is available from the usual internet sources, is read by ceasar for the full effect.
