Next Question
Different breeds of dogs can be extremely intelligent in different ways. Terriers are known for their intelligence and tenacity (read: they're smart and can be very pushy).
Many dog people refer to JRTs (both affectionately and not so affectionately) as Jack Russel Terrorists. They are very high energy dogs that require dedicated and knowledgeable owners. Some are very accomplished escape artists.
I believe that Jacks are now officially called Parson Russel Terriers, after the Reverend John Russel, who developed the breed in England in the 1800's
Here is a description from the AKC:
Right Breed for You?
Outgoing and friendly, the Parson is tenacious in the field and affectionate in the home. No matter the venue, the breed is filled with energy, so he requires regular exercise and attention. Although good with children, he does not tolerate rough handling from toddlers. The Parson is a clean breed and does not need frequent bathing, but the broken coat may need to be hand stripped..
If you're considering adopting or buying a JRT, (or any dog for that matter), it's a great idea to look at some breed books and/or talk to a breed rescue or REPUTABLE breeder about what you can expect from the breed.
PS Rescue dogs rule!
