could some one tell me what the actual process and what the name of the material is, say for people that are not going to have money anytime soon to see a dentist.

There are several different types of material used in dental fillings:

--Amalgam. Typical silver-colored fillings are made of a combination of mercury, silver, tin, copper, and zinc and are more resistant to chewing pressure than most other types of fillings. They are also less expensive than other types of fillings. The mercury binds with the other metals in the amalgam, and there is no conclusive evidence that amalgam fillings cause mercury poisoning.

--Composite. These tooth-colored fillings are made of quartz or glass particles in resin, and they can be used to fill smaller cavities than amalgam. They look more natural than amalgam fillings but aren't as strong, and they can become discolored over time.

--Ionomer. Similar to composite fillings in that they use powdered glass but differing in that they use acrylic acids instead of resin as a suspension medium, ionomer fillings have a better cosmetic appearance but less strength than other filling types.

--Gold. Gold is chemically inert and, while it is soft, it is also very tough and resistant to chewing pressure. Gold fillings are also more expensive than other types.

--Ceramic. Porcelain or similar materials are strong, long-lasting, and have a good cosmetic appearance. However, they are more abrasive than other filling types and can be as expensive as gold fillings.

The typical silver fillings are made of dental amalgams which are composed of around 50% mercury and the remaining powder is made up of mainly silver (~35%) and some tin, copper (~12%), and zinc (~2%).
