Does anyone know how to plan a road trip?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Planning a road trip depends on a lot of things. I will give you my guidelines.

First, pack enough clothes for 4-5 days of wear and all of the related items, you don't want to wash them that often.

Second, plan your stops out. For a leisurely road trip, that includes a couple of stops for sightseeing and all of that, I usually don't like to go more than 400 miles in a day. So what I would do is look at the primary destinations that I want to go to and look at possible hotel points along the way and secondary sites where I might like to explore along the way.

You could vary the amount of mileage that you do per day, depending on the attractions that you want to visit. For instance, if you want to visit a site that takes about 1/2 a day, I would not travel more than 200-300 miles during that day.

Ok, snacks and drinks. Carry a smaller or larger cooler, depending on your family and put drinks, lunch meat and whatever in there to save money. Buy all of these supplies in the grocery store.

There may be other details, but generally I take care of contingencies along the road.

If I don't have a hotel reservation, I make sure to check in to a place before 6 pm, especially in congested urban areas. But sometimes surprises occur, so it is best to call ahead and make sure you have a place.
