Does any one know how to stop my firewall from blocking Limewire?

I downloaded Limewire 4.18.8 a couple days ago and I'm not getting any search results. My Windows Firewall is turned off and I am using Norton 360. I tried turning off the Norton firewall but Limewire still showed that a firewall was blocking it (the icon in the left corner with a world and wall). I also tried changing the Firewall Program Settings for Limewire to "allow" (it had been on custom).
I don't want to leave myself unprotected, but I also want to use Limewire:) Any tips? (I have Windows Vista if that's important.)

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Could be that your machine is not the one who's blocking the results.

1. disable all firewalls

2. go to GRC Shields Up on https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

3. click on "proceed" and on "common ports"
If you get "Closed" or "Open" status on most of them, then you have control over the ports, but if you get "Stealth", then your network admin or internet provider has the control and blocked them for security reasons, in which case you should talk to "him".

4. enable your firewall and repeat step 2 and 3 (compare the results)

"Closed" and "Open" ports are reacheable from the outside, while "Stealth" ports are hidden and cannot be used.

If you are absolutely sure that you have correctly turned off both Windows Firewall and Norton's firewall, then your problem lies in a firewall outside of your computer. Try checking your internet modem, many external modems have built in firewalls. If you have an external internet modem, you can usually access it by typing 192.168.1.1 into your web browser's address bar. If you have an internal modem, your external modem has no firewall, or you are sure that this still isn't the problem, your ISP may be blocking Limewire. Many ISP's don't like P2P traffic, and some block it. The only other thing that I can think of is that you have a third firewall that you are forgetting about on your machine, which will have to be configured as well.

You don't want to leave yourself unprotected, but you want to use LimeWire...

My friend, that is physically impossible.

But, if you insist, try going into Norton settings, deleting the entry for LimeWire, turning "Automatic Program Control" off, turning "Advanced Notifications" on, and rebooting.

Then, when you start LimeWire, you will see one or more pop-up boxes. Set Limewire to "allow."

Note that sometimes, you might have firewalls built into your router, and if you are on a public network, such as a college campus, they may have blocked LimeWire.

NOTE: I DO NOT CONDONE THE USE OF LIMEWIRE FOR ILLEGAL PURPOSES. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT USE LIMEWIRE IF YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOOD FOR YOU. NOT ONLY ARE MOST OF THE THINGS THAT YOU USE LIMEWIRE FOR ILLEGAL, BUT YOUR SYSTEM IS ALSO AT A LARGE RISK FOR VIRUSES, HACKING, WORMS, TROJANS, ETC. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO USE LIMEWIRE, OR ANY OTHER P2P SOFTWARE, SAFELY.

Don't use limewire. It is a horrible breeding ground for viruses, malware and other nasty things.

If you must... the problem is with Norton. It is very difficult to tell Norton to exclude limewire from the blocked ports. To verify this, temporarily disable Norton and try to connect to the Limewire network.

However, again... Limewire really is the absolute worst P2P application. Why not use uTorrent and any of the numerous websites that are moderated and have user comments that let you know the quality?

Do not turn off your firewall or else your pc will be infected. The reason why you do not get any result is because Limewire is still searching for peers. Just leave your limewire open maybe for about 20-30 minutes until it has found peers that will act as file server, then, search for the files you want.
