Do you think there are too many different car makes and models?

Would we buy just as many if there were fewer and more recognizably different from one another?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Some analysts and experts think that some of the big manufacturers suffered in part by having way too many different vehicles makes and not refining just a few of them.

No, I think variety and choice are terrific, and the constant competition forces car manufacturers to be more innovative.

I do hope that more and more go to hybrid and electric cars, though!

I do agree that there are many different vehicle models and makes out there, but these differences allow for everyone to be satisfied with at least some cars out there. There are cars for people that want to drive safely. There are cars for people who want to drive quickly and get that rush of adrenaline. There are cars for those who want to be environmentally friendly.

The diversity amongst vehicles is important because people can always find a vehicle for them - one that fits their own personal needs or specifications. And if there were only a few car companies out there, they could easily monopolize, buy out other businesses, and raise prices on their products.

For example, if Ford, Chevrolet, and Honda were the only car companies out there, they would be making a ton of money. They could easily become a few of the biggest businesses in the country, and raise prices however they see fit with little opposition. Why? Because they can get away with it with the absence of businesses with lower prices. And competition amongst many different car companies stimulates change, a popular word nowadays. It results in better overall vehicles when companies have other companies to compete with.

So although I think there are a lot of different vehicles and vehicle companies, this diversity amongst vehicles keeps prices low and quality cars affordable.

Actually, I think it makes them more expensive because of the manufacturing costs involved in producing so many different models, we are so far away from Ford's first production line, and it was designed to make manufacture as low cost as possible. The autos of today cost as much as a small house where I live, I can never ever buy a new car again in this lifetime.
When I was young a car was about 15% the cost of a small house.

Well everything tends to be expensive nowadays because of the recession. And everyone says that people should wait at least two years before buying a new car so they can get any problems sorted out. It also allows for the cost to go down. But they would be so much more expensive if the automotive industry monopolized.
