Do you think the state of Missouri is justified in passing legislation to rename "Mark McGwire Hwy?

The State of Missouri passed legislation on May 15, 2010 to rename Mark McGwire Hwy. to Mark Twain Highway. McGwire is returning to the St. Louis Cardinals as a hitting coach, and to clear the air admitted taking steroids in 1998. Even though steroids were legal in MLB at the time, his chances of being admitted into the MLB Hall of Fame are slim. And now the state wants to rename the stretch of Hwy named after McGwire. Do you think this is overkill, or do you think Missouri is justified?

I have come to regretfully believe that the government feels it reserves the right to do whatever it so chooses. In this case, I assume they originally named the highway Mark McGwire Hwy., so I guess it is their option if they wish to once again rename it for whatever reason. My opinion on the use of PEDs is not the most widely accepted by the fans. I personally feel that any substance that improves performance or even rejuvenates a tired body is performance enhancing. If player A sweats profusely and becomes dehydrated while player B does not; is it not enhancing the current level of player A by giving him intravenous fluids? Anyway, the bottom line for me is that if things were legal or at least not regulated, does it make sense that when they are made illegal, that anyone should penalize someone who has used them? Can anyone say for sure that players in an earlier era did not use PEDs? Babe Ruth, maybe? Really; 60 home runs in a dead ball era? Doesn't his facial features resemble those of today’s steroids users; kind of roundish? Anyway, we have highways named after presidents (Kennedy, Johnson, Bush) and others who sent our young men off to die. Didn't they do much worse than use PEDs, and still there names are everywhere. Missouri should just forgive and forget. Accept the apology and get on with it. I have yet to find the honest politician. Should they stand in judgment of others?

I don’t think it is out of line for Missouri to change the name of the highway. It is a bit unfortunate that they would think they need to do such a thing, but that is the way some people who run for higher office think. Certainly there is an argument to be made that the state government shouldn’t be seen as tacitly approving the cheating that Mark McGwire did but honestly if these state lawmakers think that some kid is rolling down Mark McGwire highway with his family and suddenly decides he wants a road named after him, so he should totally do steroids, then I would have to say I don’t think state lawmakers have the slightest clue what makes kids tick these days.

In the end it is their call. It’s not like they are forcing a business to change its name or shutter its doors because it has McGwire’s name attached to it, but I think it’s making a mountain out of a molehill.
