Do you think people that have more than five cats are crazy?

I think the word crazy is a relative term. I mean, who can say someone else is crazy simply because they really really like cats? Why aren't people who have tons of dog's considered as crazy? Personally, owning tons of dogs seems crazier to me than owning tons of cats because of the copious amounts of dog poop and barking that one would have to deal with.
I have heard the term "crazy old cat lady" so many times and frankly, I don't see how the two things go hand in hand.
According Dictionary.com crazy means, "mentally deranged; demented; insane." So, is it deranged and demented to love cats a lot?
I do admit it is a little eccentric to have a lot of cats. Dictionary.com describes eccentric as, "deviating from the recognized or customary character, practice..." Now that sounds like more of a fitting description. Having a lot of cats IS deviating from the norm, but who doesn't deviate from the norm in some way or another?
Having lots of cats wouldn't be my choice, but no, I don't think it's crazy if you choose to.

M$and, it could be very difficult to keep the home and outside areas clean,
to the point where the neighbors might complain.
But, as long as the cats are sheltered, clean, have plenty of room,
are cared for, are properly vaccinated, preferably neutered,
and are legal for the given community (i.e., many zoning laws prohibit
more than a certain number of any/all animals kept in a home and even on farms),
then I don't see a problem . . .
unless, of course, the owner also keeps a large number of birds
which keep disappearing, mysteriously! ;)

M$I think that whoever determined that it could be a clinical disorder must not like cats. Some people don't really know much about cats or animals in general. Some people who have had animals live with them for many years will say that their dog or cat has no feelings or emotions, when it should be obvious that they do. That's just the way some people think. I've met some people that have many cats, including an elderly woman who I brought groceries to, whose house smelled like a soiled litter box. She said she couldn't smell anything. Unfortunately, animal control was called when the old woman passed away. She had about 40 cats.
Possibly, some people that have been abused or mistreated in early life or all of their lives may feel closer to animals that provide companionship plus won't harm them. Cats can be funny and entertaining, and usually don't need day care when their person goes to work. Keeping large dogs in great numbers would require lots of work, but some people are up to the task. Regular cleaning and replacing of litter will prevent bad smells in the house. Cats are generally clean animals.
I think that whoever likes to keep lots of cats or dogs is perfectly within the realm of "normal" and it's just what and who they prefer to have around them and live with.
I have one cat, and would like one dog in addition.
To me, 10 - 15 cats or dogs or animals, is a lot to feed, take care of, and handle all by yourself. When I think about just our cat, by herself, she is a little bit of work, not a LOT by any means. She still takes time to be fed, play with, be brushed, and scoop her poop. She still costs money, as minimal as it is. I can't imagine the chaos that comes with being responsible for 10 - 15 or more cats, or dogs, and any other animal for that matter. So in that respect, a person must be a little different in the head, or crazy (used loosely) to want to do all of that, by themselves or even with just one other person. I may just consider that person crazy afterall.
Now on the flip side, I know a man who has 3-5 children or so, a couple of cats, a couple of dogs, some chickens, and some hamsters or something like that. I don't consider him crazy. I know that he is a loving, and caring person, and would do anything for his family.
So maybe that's what we should all consider these people differently. Perhaps all they want is to give all of their love to something, and it doesn't necessarily have to be human.

M$I only think it deviates into "craziness" when you have more animals than you can manage to take care of effectively, either cleanliness-wise or financially. For some people that will be two animals, and for some people it will be ten. It completely depends on the person, their means, the time they have to devote to their animals, and their dedication to their pets.
One of the things I find incredibly sad are people who hoard animals that they cannot care for. If animals are being neglected in any way, I would question that person's mental health state. An obsession over animals can easily decline into even more harmful behaviours.
