Male perspective: To be honest, until I read this question and did some digging, I thought that Hendricks was a really thin, culturally-ideal woman. Then again, I know her from Firefly, where she played a vixen. Moving on...

I think having real role models is great for girls. I think that it's important to show that "regular" people can still be "hot." Most important, I think it's important we teach girls that these absurd ideas of beauty actually aren't attractive. Real beauty is.

I wouldn't say she'll "alleviate" the issue. Probably more like help to bring awareness to, or influence, but alleviate seems to similar to "cure" or "repair." Sure, she'll help, but she isn't a savior. She's still a person, far as I can tell, and no one person can fix this mess alone.

I blogged about this issue @ http://blog.rantspot.co.tv/2010/01/skeletons-are-ugly.html and recycled some thoughts.

@omicron I believe you misread my statement. "...absurd ideas of beauty actually aren't attractive. Real beauty is." I didn't say real beauty's not beautiful; quite the opposite.

@dayz1230 Good for you for maintaining positive body image in light of culture telling you not to. I've heard from girls how difficult that can be.

I think alleviate was a poor word choice. But I'm happy she's getting a lot of positive attention regarding her body.

I'm a little thinner than she is and I never thought of myself as having body issues but I also never considered myself to be thin. My friend's have acted as though I was insulting myself when I say that I'm voluptuous. I think of it as being womanly and I'm happy to see that being celebrated in the mainstream media.

I think her alleviation to fame will definitely help some women with body issues. That being said, Christina Hendricks still has an amazing body and is curvy in all the right places so to speak so it's not going to give all women the same increase in confidence.

I think it will definitely help a lot of women that have a similar frame to her, but it still doesn't deal with the issues of photo shopping (which she clearly participates in, see her latest shoot for esquire) unnatural clear skin and reduction of cellulite.
