Do you plan to buy Google's Nexus One phone? Why or why not?

Also, make sure to check out the Nexus One page on Mahalo for the nitty gritty details about Google's new smartphone! :)
Tip for best answer: M$1.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

YES! I bought it unlocked even though I probably could have gotten an upgrade discount. Going with a contract requires you to get a $80/month plan with T-Mobile with no option for the cheaper $60/month Even More Plus plan. This makes the unlocked route the cheaper way to go over the course of two years:

New Customer
$179 + $80/month x 24 months = $2099

Upgrade
$279 + $80/month x 24 months = $2199
$379 + $80/month x 24 months = $2299

Unlocked
$529 + $60/month x 24 months = $1969

As for the phone, I've been waiting for a killer Android phone to come to T-Mobile. I had my hopes set for the myTouch but after using it the screen was too small and the device is really underpowered for Android. The Cliq looked promising but turned out to be a dud performance wise.

The Droid caught my eye until I priced out Verizon plans and the cheapest was $80 a month if I remember correctly. I really didn't want a two year contract, those things are history.

Think about it, Android is going to keep the momentum up and there are going to be more and more great phones. Do you really want to be locked down with a 2 year contract? Heck no.

And the Nexus One is gorgeous looking phone with a better camera than the Droid, so I went for it yesterday and ordered it before they finished the press conference. Overnight shipping is awesome as it is on a delivery truck in my area right now!

I will not... because I already own an iPhone. I don't need another phone.

I just finally bought a smartphone a few weeks back (Droid) and now comes Nexus. (sigh). I probably won't get the Nexus. Looks like most interface is still pretty similar to the currently OS in the Droid. I did notice the voice input that I really like and want but I think as long as I can successfully and safely upgrade to Android 2.1, I should get that feature and can be content with the Droid.

As a recent owner of a HTC Hero on Sprint, and Nokia E71x on AT&T I will have to wait for a while on a new phone. The good news is that HTC announced on Twitter that the 2.1 update is coming to the Sprint Hero the first half of 2010.I will recommend the Nexus to clients who are looking for a killer phone, and the pricing is very attractive, half what I am paying AT&T, SIGH!!

Anybody notice the clarification from @sprint? Hero on Sprint will not be getting 2.0...it will get 2.1 :)

Much as I would love to have the Nexus One, the pricing is way too steep. I am currently a T-Mobile customer without a data plan. I cannot afford the unlocked phone, and even the $279 price for current subscribers who add a data plan is too much.

No, I won't be buying one. While I may lust after such a device, I cannot justify the purchase cost. I already have a phone that does VERY well at two things. It's a phone, and it's a camera. Most other functionality might be nice, but when I have a laptop nearby I cannot justify paying data charges.

This is also the same reason I skipped the iPhone. I can't justify the cost of the toy, and for me, that's what it would be.

my iPhone's mic and ear speaker is muffled a bit so if that gets any worse and they do not fix it for free when I send it back I'll be jumping ship to the nexus

No. I am not convinced that the Nexus1 is better than the iPhone. I'll look at the best smart phones on the market when my contract is up in 18 months.

I'm in the market for a new phone and I don't plan to buy the Nexus one because I work for Sprint and because Google decided to not make the phone CDMA compatible. Come on Google wth!!! There are no bigger cellular networks in America than CDMA yet your flagship phone comes to market as GSM only. Windows mobile on the HTC touch line and Blackberry both offer dual network capabilities.
