Do you get all sneezy and sniffly when you tweeze your eyebrows? I do and I have no idea why. What causes this reaction?

An excerpt from http://www.oprah.com/article/omagazine/200710_omag_val_eyebrows :

"The facial nerves include the trigeminal, which has a branch that extends from the brow down into the tip of the nose. Sometimes, when plucking your eyebrows, that nerve is stimulated: Aaachoo!"

Other sneeze-related information from Discovery.com:

"Sneezing, it turns out, can be inspired by a bewildering range of nonsensical stimuli.
Sneezing fits can be triggered by combing hair, tweezing eyebrows, rubbing the inner corner of the eye, and even by eating too much."

Yeah. Sneezing's pretty random. You know what makes me sneeze too? When the sun hits my face!

It has to do with the nerves around your eyes. Some of the nerve pathways connect the skin as well as the underlying muscle of the nose and eyes, so when you stimulate part of the nerve by plucking, you also stimulate the part of it further down.

Further, if you're making your eyes water, the tear ducts in your eyes drain right into your nose. Double whammy.

Im a make up artist and skin care specialist, usually the hair that your tweezing is being pulled in the opposite direction as its growing. Which cause irritation and itchiness. If you hold up your eye brow when you tweeze in the direction your eyebrow hairs go it works alot better! good luck!

Hi there,
It’s kinda funny that I am answering this question but, here we go. It has to do with your eyes and the contact that they have with light. Typically you are plucking your eyes near light and the reflection of the mirror has a direct effect. Here is a useful link.

Several things cause this reaction:
1. You could be inhaling the very hairs that you are removing from your eyebrow. Without realizing it, you could be breathing it in and temporarily bother your sinuses.
2. Your eyes, nose, and ears all depend on whether your sinuses are clear or not. When you are tweezing your eyebrows, you may or may not realize that you get teary-eyed. Similarly to when you cry, your nose will usually get stuffy, causing you to sneeze.
3. Tweezing nose hairs results in the same outcome...except worst! Not only is it more painful, but your nose gets extremely runny. The hairs in your nostril actually help to keep all the junk in there from pouring out.
4. Problems encountered in the ears, nose, or eyes will also effects the other two areas. For example, an ear infection could cause sinus issues and blockup. In this case, plucking the hair near your eyes will cause runniness or congestion.

I hope I helped; have a great day!!!

When you are plucking, are you breathing through your nose? You could be inhaling a few small hairs, this will make your allergies act up. Next time try breathing through your mouth and see what happens. Thats what I have to do.
