Do you believe there is good in everyone? Are some people just plain evil?

I've always been taught that there is good in everyone, and that we should strive to see that good and bring it out in people. However, my best friend says that some people are just plain evil. My sister recently told me some stories of cruelty that a guy was sharing with her at work. While I don't wish to retell these horrible stories that just break my heart, I am having a hard time believing that there is people who do not have any good in them what-so-ever. Are some people just plain evil?

I think it depends upon your definition of "good." If you mean altruistic, there are definitely people who lack that quality entirely. In fact, some people are skeptical about the research behind the study of psychopathy because they believe researchers are using the word "psychopath" as a clinical way to say "evil." Psychopathy is not actually recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, and is essentially sitting in the criminology camp because researchers have identified these individuals as being incapable of things like love, sympathy, compassion and really any meaningful connection to another human being or living thing. The APA isn't willing to say such a thing exists, particularly because it has been deemed untreatable.

So, some people would say, yes, psychopaths are "evil." That doesn't mean that they all cause harm, however. They are just prone to doing so because of their condition.

Some people might use the term "good" to mean valuable, though. As in, all human beings have value, just because they exist. In that sense, teasing out the "good" in someone could really mean bringing out their value. Even a psychopath has value, if you can put what assets he does bring to the table to work. He may not want to help other people, but that doesn't mean that he can't. He could have a social value, or a social good. For instance, he could use his talents at manipulation to raise money for a hospital. He might be doing it for all the wrong reasons (power, the joy of getting someone to do what he wants, the salary), but he is still doing good.

In that sense, even someone who is socially useless and just plain sick has some potential for good. I guess it just depends upon how optimistic you want to be.

Hi @cosmopinkice! Like you I have grown and thought to believe that people are inherently good instead of the other way around. And this has been my belief until now. I thought that God is good and we are His creatures so no matter how bad a person do, there is a part of him that is good that haven't surfaced yet.

There are many factors why a person do bad things. There are some who have been victims themselves of abuse when they were just children and when they grow up to become adults, they want to fight and have their revenge because they feel helpless when they were still small.
Some do bad things because they are under the influence of alcohol or substance abuse. I understand your best friend because sometimes it is hard to understand why would a certain person take another person's life, or abuse a child , etc.

But as I have said there are some underlying factors and reasons why they did this. Some were blinded with hatred that they are consumed with rage, some are blinded by power that they will do anything so that this power will not be taken from them even if it meant abusing other people's rights.
I still rest in the thought that no matter how bad a person is, if he will repent, turn away from his evil ways and he is doing an effort to change, there is still hope in him. For I believe that every person is a temple of God and if he will just listen to a small voice that he can hear which is his conscience there is hope for him to repent.

Of course at some level you can always say someone has a good spot. Even Hitler had a girlfriend. Saddam killed his own family members but let his sons live outside the edicts of their religion. As the joke goes if your looking to find God then go to Prison. Because everyone that goes there seems to find him, so that must be where he lives. Everyone has some sort of kindness in them no matter what kind of a degenerate they may be. Al Capone killed hundreds but still raised his kids. So no one can be totally evil but their degenerative habits could be what keeps them out of society. Even the criminally insane have their moments.

In my observation, I believe there is good in everyone the moment a person is born into this world, the things that make a person plain evil, is the world that surrounds a good person during the early years of his or her life. The way a person is brought up by his/her parents have a direct influence on how will the person turn up during the adult life.

Just glance at a baby, you can see innocence all over his place and the goodness that has been introduced in life on Earth. The moment he gradually grows, he/she is molded by the environment in which he lives, this maybe either good or bad.

As he/she matures, whatever would be the result would either be the coming of age of goodness or evil.

If you are good, and care about other people it can be quite shocking to realize that plenty of people out there are willing to say whatever they need to say in order to get what they want to get. The concept seems so alien to you, that you keep looking around for something "good" or useful about them.

To say all human beings have "value" because they are human beings is circular logic. All human beings have the potential to be valuable, some chose evil

I'm not too sure about this. I've always seen good and evil as a matter of perspective. Can you call someone evil if they believe what they are doing is right? Can you call a person evil if they commit acts they know are bad because of difficult to control urges or impulses. It becomes difficult to define what evil is when you consider why people do the things they do.

I think evil is knowing something is wrong and having no reason to do it, but doing it anyway. When there is a reason then there is logic, and while logic is cold and calculated, it isn't really evil. The taking of another life can be justified by cold logic depending on a persons beliefs, there are many common belief systems which allow for killing and sometimes these can be taken too far. Doing bad things for your own personal benefit is selfish, not evil. It becomes hard in this sense to decide what evil really is.

Perhaps true evil is really the opposite of what true good is. Doing something positive with no benefits to yourself or even more so, doing good when it negatively affects yourself. The opposite of this would have to be doing evil when it negative affects yourself being the truest level of evil. Doing bad things despite knowing that it would bring no joy, no benefit, no foreseeable positive affect to yourself, and in fact make you worse off. Doing it simply because you know in your heart it is the wrong thing to do.

This... I don't think exists, which leads me to the conclusion that everyone has a little good in them, however small.

I also was taught to see the good in people, but that is a very sheltered way to bring a child up. Children need too know the bad crap and people do exist. What good was in Jeffery Dalmer or the son of Sam? None that I can see, they were evil men. Perhaps that is only because we heard about them after they committed their heinous acts against the victims. Dalmer looks like a nice guy in this photo but we all know differently.

Sharon Warmer the TX prostitute that killed those men did have some good in her according to the movie that was made about her. She loved the girl and helped her younger siblings, which was good, but she hated men.

Hitler was also evil in the mind of many people, but he too loved a woman so he must have had some good in him.

I think that most people have both good and bad, it’s just that some people have far more evil in them then the rest of us.

After watching a complete season of the show 'Most Evil' presented by forensic psychiatrist Michael Stone... I have concluded that there are the rare birds that are born without much natural compassion. Put them in a great environment and they turn out okay. But put them in a dysfunctional home and you'll have Ted Bundy Jr.

If you haven't seen this show, I highly recommend it. I think you can get it on Netflix.

I know that there can be many factors that come in to play when you look at a scale of evil that humans are capable of, but environment plays a big enough roll so that if all the cards fall in the right place... another Charles Manson can easily be made.

What gives me hope is knowing that a child born without good emotional skills can still lead a decent life with lots of love and compassion.

I am not sure that everyone has good in their hearts. I guess I do not necessarily associate it with being evil, I just stay away from people that are mean spirited.

I guess as we get older we learn more and more and see more and more. In the past few years I have learned more life lessons than I dreamed.

First is that we can only control ourselves. We can not control others in any way including their actions.

Secondly, we need to love ourselves whole heartedly, because if we don't, no one will.

Thirdly, nothing lasts forever so cherish every moment.

I understand who I am and like to surround myself with people who are loving, sweet, kind and who have a big heart.

Is there room for people to change? Of course. People who are mean may have been hurt in the past, somehow or someway, maybe they feel like they have to be mean to protect themselves. I am not certain.

Another thing that I have learned is that anger and hatred just hurts US. It doesn't hurt the person we are mad at.

Oh yeah, there are evil people.

Only an evil person could commit murder or rape, and it is a reality that these crimes are committed. Once someone goes over to The Dark Side enough that they don't value someone else's psyche (in the case of rape) or life (in the case of murder), I do not believe the good in them can come out unless they completely turn their lives over to God. God can heal them, but I do not believe any amount of human effort can.

As Quesera posted, yes, evil people can accomplish good things. They just are doing it for the money, fame, power or glory, rather than for altruism, which they don't appreciate or perceive.

Yes, even evil people are someone's child, brother, sister or even parent, and are loved by someone and may even love someone, to an extent. I do not think those relationships make the person good, though.
