Gerbils as rodent pets are very interesting and cute. They are non-aggressive, sociable around human and other gerbils and rare biter when unprovoked and unstressed. Although these animals are known for their large pointed teeth, they can still be an excellent pet choice for young children. But this depends on the kind of gerbil you want to get.
As far as I know, there is no harm of bringing gerbils as your new pet at home and for your children to handle because they are easy to take care of.
However, always get enough information about gerbils from animal specialists before finally deciding on having them to avoid causing you and your pets some stressful problems later on. Like any other rodents, there is a possibility that gerbils can also carry diseases and infect other gerbils.
Some gerbils like the ones living in the Kazakhstan desert might cause some human plague. In any case, always take precaution around these pets and bring them to your vet when there are sudden behavioral changes. And take note, when letting your child take care of pets, whether gerbil or not, always remember that adult assistance is required and necessary.
