Do front-loading washing machines have safety features?

Four-year-old Kayley Ishii of Orange County, California, was killed when she climbed into her family's washing machine and her toddler brother switched it on. Is there some sort of safety feature on these machines to prevent such tragedies?

I don't know much about washing machines but I read your question and looked it up. I found one article that talks about a front loading washing machine that does have a child safety feature. To quote from the article "The HMW1270KFL Front Load Washing Machine has a child lock, as well as other integrated child-safety features." It seems like some companies have children in mind when they design their products. However, you should still pay attention to your children when they are playing so that they don't have an opportunity to get into any mischief.

I don't know how many such washers have such safety features built in, but for those that don't, you can purchase such a feature:

Of course, the best safety feature that should have been used is parental supervision.

No... we can't protect the world (although we try with coffee cups that say "Caution: Contents may be hot"... well, no duh!) I'm sure there will be new legislature that mandates a sticker on washers that say "Warning: Children must be supervised when playing with major appliances."

I would think that the controls are way out of the way, but... if you're not monitoring your kids, they can do pretty much anything.

When I was thinking about this I remember that our front-loader DOES have a feature. When you turn it on, it LOCKS the door! Urgh...

Here's another add-on safety device:

It seems that the only feature designed to stop something like this would be child locks designed to lock out all of the buttons to prevent children from using them. Actually sealing the doors or features to detect children or something like that doesn't seem plausible or actual.
