do all Ubuntu .deb packages work on Debian as well?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

No. Some ubuntu packages will have dependencies set that can not be met with debian repositories. That being said, you *could* add the repositories needed and grab the packages needed, but by the time that the trees are all up to a required version, you would likely be running enough to say your system is running Ubuntu rather than Debian.

As Ubuntu is based on Debian, it should work.
From WikiPedia:
Debian packages are also used in distributions based on Debian, such as Ubuntu.

I thought I remembered reading something on the Debian site when 5 was released that not all Ubuntu debs would work, but can't seem to find it now.
