Why is diabetes and high blood pressure tending to occur together? How common is hypertension in people with diabetes?

About 75% of people with diabetes can expect to develop hypertension eventually. Diabetes contributes directly to the development of hypertension through several mechanisms, including hormonal changes, expansion of blood volume, impairment of the body's ability to sense and adjust blood pressure (baroreceptor response), autonomic dysfunction (impaired coordination between the body's various regulatory mechanisms), and chemical stresses including increased oxidation.
