I hear myself snoring all the time, typically when I'm on the edge of sleeping/waking. It will often wake me up for a short while. This happens a lot when I'm getting a massage and I'm face down on a massage table.

As to why people only make snoring noises while sleeping: as far as I understand it, one reason people make noise is because their jaw drops back into a position due to being extremely relaxed (typically a state only achieved during sleep) causing the soft palette to become much more narrow than usual. The resulting narrowing causes the surrounding tissues to vibrate as air passes through. The chest, open mouth and sinus cavity all act as echo chambers, amplifying the vibrations.

I'm fairly certain I made a hash of the various body parts, but that's the essential principal.

I'm not a medical doctor but I've read that snoring is usually caused by the tongue moving further back to the throat thereby partially blocking the airways. The vibration caused by the partial blockage is what we here as the snoring. During deep sleep, the tongue being a special type of muscle, would go on a relaxed state and would move further back the throat. That's why I think people who snore don't here themselves snoring as they've reached this relaxed, deep sleep.

I'm thinking there could be other causes on other people. But this is what I remember from what I've read.

Oh, but they do! I take my siesta sitting up in my chair in the living room, midday. What wakes me up is, a small snore after about a half hour! Every time! (Normally I don't snore. You may ask mi esposa.)
