Risk factors for gestational diabetes?
According to the American Diabetes Association, you're considered at high risk for this condition (and should be screened early) if:
You're obese (your body mass index is over 30).
You have a history of gestational diabetes (you've had the condition in a previous pregnancy).
You have a strong family history of diabetes.
Some practitioners will also screen you early if:
You're found to have sugar in your urine (your urine is tested at each prenatal visit).
You've previously given birth to a big baby (some use 8 pounds, 13 ounces as the cut off; others use 9 pounds, 14 ounces).
You've had an unexplained stillbirth.
You've had a baby with a birth defect.
You have high blood pressure.

The majority women i.e. at about 95% will enjoy the pregnancy without noticing any gestational diabetes. But some will receive the Gestational Diabetes during their pregnancy. In other words, the high amount of sugar circulates in their body. Such high sugar level attracts many health problems for the pregnant woman and baby also. It occurs to non-diabetic women during pregnancy.
If the gestational diabetes not controlled it causes greater risk of preeclampsia which develops after 20th week of pregnancy. It is one type of disorder that consists of high blood pressure and protein in the urine. In such situation, predelivery is necessary. Sometimes preeclampsia also leads to seizures. Besides there is also attraction of polhydramnios
The diagnosis of Gestational Disease may be done with the tests like Fasting blood glucose, screening glucose challenge test, oral glucose tolerance test etc. The Gestational diabetes affects mother and as well as baby. The affects include increase of risk of high blood pressure during pregnancy, increase risk of a larger baby, low blood glucose to baby, breathing problems to baby etc.
