Definition:
WebMD describes diarrhea as loose and watery bowel movements (stools). Osmotic diarrhea is a type of diarrhea meaning that "something in the bowel is drawing water from the body into the bowel."

Causes:
A common cause of osmotic diarrhea is artificial sweeteners, like sorbitol and mannitol. According to the MayoClinic, "artificial sweeteners found in chewing gum and other sugar-free products, can cause diarrhea in some otherwise healthy people." Other causes include:
-fruit
-beans
-lactase deficiency (and you consumed milk or dairy products)
-overgrowth of normal intestinal bacteria or the growth of bacteria normally not found in the intestines
-Infection by certain parasites
-Antibiotics
The severity of osmotic diarrhea depends on how much of the osmotic substance is consumed.

Treatment:
As always see a doctor to determine the right treatment for your body. Common treatments, therapies and remedies include:
-Stop eating/drinking the substance causing the diarrhea.
-Replace fluids. Drink plenty of water, clear broth and juice (avoid apple and pear juices). Drink small amounts of fluids frequently; at least six 8oz glasses per day.
-Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
-Over-the-counter medicine, like
Pepto-Bismol, Imodium A-D, and Kaopectate.
-Replace solid foods gradually, starting with items like crackers, toast, rice, eggs and chicken.

WebMD advises you to "contact your doctor if you have prolonged diarrhea or a fever that lasts
more than 24 hours."
