Dirt Cookies - What's your thoughts on poor Haitian people eating Dirt Cookies to survive (salt, vegetable oil, and dirt)?

Depending on where the dirt came from and if it was rich with organic matter, it might be suitably *eek* nutritious. Again depending on the dirt's origin...
It might obviously be WAY more of a health hazard. Most dirt harbors all sorts of bacterias, fungi, viruses and ... urghhh... parasites...

And even if it were to be "properly sanitized" with equipment (likely not a reasonable option for this culture) like boiling or irradiation, the minor nutritive properties would be mostly lost.
Not to say this culture should be interfered with, but if they're open to suggestions.... I would hope someone could help them migrate to a better land, that was hospitable to good agriculture. It looks like making those dirt cookies takes as much effort as a farm anyway! :)
