Omega-3 fatty acids can prevent or slow down the progression of Alzheimer's. You can get omega-3s by eating fish (or taking fish oil supplements), flaxseeds, or walnuts.

I'm a big fan of flaxseeds ... you can buy them in bulk at your grocery store for very cheap ($3/lb) and they keep for forever. Then grind 2tbsp in a coffee grinder each day and toss it into a smoothie, or oatmeal, or yogurt, or whatever else you'd already be eating. (You *must* grind flax seeds or you lose all the benefit, as your teeth can't break them down well enough.) They don't have much of a taste, and 2tbsp is all you need.

There is increasing evidence that Alzheimer's is actually "type three diabetes" and that calorie-restricted diets (which sounds worse than it is - it means under 1,500 calories a day, which is normal in my book!) go a long way towards even *reversing* Alzheimer's, but studies are still being done. Still, not over-eating is good sense for anybody.

The spice turmeric and green, leafy vegetables may also minimize the chance of developing Alzheimer's, and are also something normal and healthy that everyone should be consuming more of

Will add just a bit to the above answer.

Foods rich in Vitamin E have been found to help prevent Alzheimer's disease, including oil-based salad dressings like Italian, fortified cereals, green leafy vegetables, cantaloupe, seeds and nuts. Vitamin E has proven to stop the oxidation of the brain that causes mental deterioration.

Foods to avoid would be saturated and trans-unsaturated fats including fatty meats, butter, shortening and milk.
