MSNBC proposed this list of 10 foods that make America great, and then compiled the responses it got into Your favorite American foods.

Most things on the list are loved, but not exactly haute cuisine, and maybe not ideal dinner party foods.

Such things as cheesesteaks, clam chowder and buffalo wings are high on the lists.

There's also this article on America's Best Meals organised by region. Again there's no proof that these are the most popular, but they're certainly well known and well liked. List includes such things as scrapple and Key Lime Pie.

But I think you're maybe barking up the wrong tree looking for popular dishes, if that's also going to mean things people already eat frequently. You won't have a memorable and impressive occasion if you serve mainly things that people have often.
